This is, what, like the 5th story in a month about people going nuts and shooting each other?
I think I'm speechless. I don't want full-on crazy gun control but maybe they should better screen the wackjobs who buy them.

This is very sad. I've been listening to the coverage of it on CFRB (love listening to the Canadian point of view). They just played some coverage of it when it first happened, and you can hear the shots being fired. No screams or anything, but you can hear the sirens.
I do think they should enforce the gun control laws they have on the books and not make new ones. The reason why wackjobs get their hands on guns is because of them being stolen or they get the guns in other ways.
1) Make guns more expensive.
2) Add even more taxes to ammunition etc.
3) Psychological Profiles.
4) Gun club membership.
5) Raise age limits - 18 is not an age at which one should be able to purchase firearms.
6) Even stiffer penalties.
7) Amnesty on illegal firearms.
8) Fill out forms: Reasons for desired gun ownership, previous knowledge of firearms etc.
9) Ascertain address, only allow sale if individual can prove they live at said approved address.
10) Gun safety in schools.

She called me Lover and I called her darling when I came down to...
Called her sugar when I ate..
..Her alive until daylight & slept with her all over me..
..From forehead to ribcage I was dressed in her.
This is just absolutely bizarre...who just decides to go into a classroom building and open fire?

A crazy nutjob who wants to go on a shooting spree will figure out a way to do it, even if they obtain a gun illegally. I'm used to people having guns around for hunting and the people I know who own guns are responsible about it - they've taken classes and they lock them up and all that. The people we need to worry about are the thugs, lunatics and idiots who get their hands on weapons - legally or otherwise. Most of the shooting stories we hear about around here are about accidental shootings when kids are playing with guns or people shot in drug deals/robberies. I really doubt the drug dealers and thiefs are going through the proper channels of buying a gun.
With that said, I like Murderface's idea of requring gun club memberships and requiring gun safety classes. I don't know if higher fees would help though - rich people can be crazy too.
I think the situation is senseless, sad and tragic. It's too bad people think they need to blow away complete strangers to solve their problems. Sadly, these stories don't shock me much anymore. I just keep wondering what the frig is wrong with people lately.
Update - the gun shop owner was interviewed on CNN. He said the guy provided three forms of ID and passed the State's background check. He said there was nothing odd about the guy. Just goes to show you can never tell.

WHY wasn't ANYONE at the campus told...2 hours and then an EMAIL?? They F'd up big time!
They probably thought the first one was an isolated incident and didn't want to panic the entire campus at that time, but nobody expected the guy to come back and go insane like that. I don't think the campus was to blame, and like Jess said to me earlier, you cannot put an entire college campus on lockdown...too many buildings spread over too much area, just not feasible.

It wasn't the campus' fault, because they did think the first incident was just a domestic issue. And what do you want the whole entire campus to be locked down over a domestic issue?
I'm impressed an e-mail went out within two hours...I know I'd hate to have to track down every individual student and faculty on a huge campus. Heck when they evacuated our apartment building because of a gas leak, nobody bothered to come tell us and there isn't even more then 8 apartments in MY section of the complex. If we hadn't looked out the window and saw the firetrucks, then went outside and saw the crowd of people...and it turned out not be a false alarm....well who knows what could have happened?
"People who want to take this within 24 hours of the event and make it their political hobby horse to ride, I've got nothing but loathing for them." -Governor Kaine, Virginia (on new gun control laws).
Make that 48 hours, 72 hours, whatever. It also applies to blaming the university, the police, video games, songs, and whatever else the scumbuckets use to further their political careers.

Not only politicians, but anyone who even wants to start assigning blame for anything before we even know just what was going on.
I agree with that. Why is it that we always feel the need to assign blame to everything and everyone EXCEPT the actual murderer? He's the one who bought the guns and pulled triggers. He's the one who was fucking psycho.

It's human nature to blame others besides the one person who did this. It's the gunman's fault not video games, not TV, not movies, etc. I read Dr Phil is blaming the video game industry for this.
I wonder how we coped as kids with stuff going on? When I grew up we barely heard about this kind of stuff.
