Gay men still barred from giving blood.

Story Here.

To me, it would be a different story if they were banning people who had had unprotected sex of any form. But to word it like they did (asking a male if he has had sex with another male) just smacks of discrimination. They're not asking if it was unprotected sex, just if they had sex with a man. What a load of crap, especially when the blood banks are running dry.

I think there is a question they ask about unprotected sex, but I can't really remember right now. I can see why they did it back in '83 when they didn't know as much about HIV as they do now, but it's about time they take that question off there and just ask about unprotected sex.

Kinda off topic, but damn. I thought gay people had it bad over here. It's not even close to what they go through in Russia:

Gay Activists Get Beat Down and Detained

I can't believe that! Straight people are just as likely to have HIV. If you need any further proof, just look at Africa. Geez!

And as for the Pride festival - that sucks too. I guess we sometimes take living in America for granted. I'll be attending our local parade and festival this Sunday and I can't wait - it's always a blast!

Re: Gay men still barred from giving blood.

This is kinda, sorta related but I was prevented from giving blood recently. I was working at a lawfirm when there was an email that went around about giving blood in aid of that bridge collapse so I signed up. One of the questions was "Did you spend more than a month in the United Kingdom between the years of 1990 and 1996?". I put yes because I did live there for two years. They told me I couldn't give blood because of mad cow disease. I couldn't believe it. My reasoning is that you could get it if you spent a few DAYS there but they were asking about a month and wouldn't I be manifesting symptoms 12 years later?

I know it's for health reasons but the logic fails me. Had I lied and said I was only there for a couple of weeks, I'd have been less a pint that day.

I just don't get it.
