Sony's Rootkit

What does eveyone think about Sony CD installing a rootkit onto your windows box?

What does "root" mean in Australianese?

As for the program, I think a lot of internet and software companies use "phantom" programs to track and spam customers, so I'm not surprised that Sony did it...it doesn't sound evil per se, but it is annoying to know that someone may potentially be spying on your computer.
