Normally I don't think too highly of Courtney Love, but like us, she has ZERO love for the RIAA. She wrote an interesting article for salon.com back on June 14, 2000 where in the article she defends Net radio versus RIAA.
Quote:
Today I want to talk about piracy and music. What is piracy? Piracy is the act of stealing an artist's work without any intention of paying for it. I'm not talking about Napster-type software.
I'm talking about major label recording contracts.
Judges Refuse DiMA?s Request to Reconsider Major Flaws in Internet Radio Royalty Decision
Congressional Action Needed before May 15 to Halt Widespread Webcaster Bankruptcies
April 16, 2007 ? The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) today denied requests made by DiMA and other parties for a rehearing to reconsider issues in its March 2 determination of Internet radio royalty rates. Without Congressional intervention, the decision ? which is retroactive to January 2006 ? will go into effect May 15, with royalty rate increases of 300 to 1200 percent for webcasters. It is expected that many of these webcasters will declare bankruptcy at that time.
Digital Media Association (DiMA) Executive Director Jonathan Potter issued the following statement:
?The CRB?s denial of a rehearing today is all but a nail in the coffin for Internet radio, and May 15 now looms as the day the music will die. Internet radio provides exposure and royalties for thousands of independent artists and labels that are not represented by broadcast radio ? and last year, 72 million people tuned in every month. We call on Congress to step in to save Internet radio for the artists, the labels, the webcasters and ? most importantly ? the tens of millions of listeners.?
Please contact Ann Brown at (202) 478-6135 with any questions or to speak with DiMA Executive Director Jonathan Potter.
The only way this will be stopped now will be through listeners and artists getting their congressional representatives involved.
THIS MEANS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
If you've been waiting thinking this may blow over without affecting you too much like last time, think again. RR and CGR survived last time, but 2 other stations we partnered with didn't.
WE WON'T SURVIVE THIS TIME.
Donations won't save us. Cash won't save us. YOU MUST GET INVOLVED TO SAVE US! There is no other way.
You won't even have alternate stations to tune into. May 15 will be the REAL day the music died. For the love of God, GET INVOLVED!!

I've done all I could. I've e-mailed, I've written and called, but nothing except for a form letter I got from Hilary Clinton. I don't know what else to do besides going to Washington DC and doing a protest in front of Congress. I would if I had the money to get to Washington DC.
Like I needed to read this now.
Gee. Sure glad I decided to make my show bi-weekly now. Now I can maybe get TWO more shows in before they shut us all down instead of ONE.
I should just start pre-recording my shows and sending them out to people privately. Stupid judges. Stupid greedy unctuous snake-licking music execs. Like this is about getting ARTISTS their money. They can trumpet that all they want. This is about one of two things, pure and simple:
1. Buying themselves more executive boats and executive hair plugs
2. The absolute destruction of independent webcasting
And you know what happens if we die? You get the same homogenized Clear Channel bullshit you get now. That's all that'll be left to listen to for free. But you mark my words...it won't be free for long. And then they've got you dead to rights.
Everything TV9 said is right. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop since the new royalties figures were announced. I've told TV9 over and over again that I really think this is it for us all...the absolute end. The only hope we have at this point is if Congress gets involved and rescues us. CONGRESS. My faith in that body of government hasn't exactly been bolstered over the last decade or so. But if they don't intervene this time, that's it.
Oh, one more thing you might want to remember - if there's no Renegade Retro and City Of Glass Radio, there's no Retro Radio Network. If there's no Retro Radio Network, this forum also ceases to exist. No more posts, no arcade, NOTHING. It'll all be gone like smoke in the wind.
^ Yeah, I kinda figured that the board would go poof if the radio stations are killed off by the RIAA. I've already signed the petitions linked to in this thread and e-mailed the Indiana congressmen and senators but I highly doubt they'll do anything. It's up to the gods now, I'm afraid
Sorry I can't do more...I don't think I'm electable.

These dumbass judges haven't thought without internet radio say goodbye to the Amber Alert system. Oh it won't go away all together, but a lot of stations except for news stations won't even bother with this.
Also a lot of colleges will stop streaming their radio stations and there goes some good shows I have come to love. One of my good friends is a disc jockey with WFDU and I listen to his show every week. I don't know what I'd do without that show.
Oh and the independent artists and groups will go nowhere without internet radio because do you really think commercial radio will pick them up. Oh and the bands that were big in the 80s that are coming back won't have a venue to get their new stuff out there because commerical radio thinks a lot of 80s bands who are still around are has beens who people don't care about.
But I guess some people don't care. I do wish I could do more. Maybe I'll have to write and call again. Like Congress will even listen to this. The RIAA probably has bought a lot of them out.
They probably won't say anything, but I just e-mailed my Congresswoman (Louise Slaughter) and Senators Chuck Schumer and Hilary Clinton. I'm also going to PM some of my musician friends at Myspace and see if they can help. Maybe I can get Captain Sensible to do something. He's into activism and this might intrest him.
I'm going to Post this on metal Shop's Myspace (I wrote it so feel free to post it):

well the notion is to get people interested in the article enough to open it (hence the titleand all those entries. with the final entry basicly being a plea to contact representatives. Combine it with all the other Save net radio bulletins in there.
Basicly a list of events if nothing is done about te CRB Rates.

Well I left a message at Myspace to both Captain Sensible and Glenn Tilbrook (they are both the real deal). I doubt I'll get any response from either of them, but at least they know that their music won't be enjoyed by fans anymore because commercial stations won't even play their music.
Well...Here's the reply (bulk e-mail reply, but it's a reply anyways) from one of my senators, George Voinovich
Thank you for contacting my office. I genuinely appreciate your e-mail and thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. As with all communications with my office, your views have been recorded.
Every day, I hear from the people of Ohio through their phone calls, letters and faxes to my office. As you can imagine, I also receive a significant number of e-mails daily. Mass-generated e-mails sent by a third-party group, which are usually form text, have hindered my ability to respond to the e-mails, phone calls, letters and faxes that I receive. Due to the increasing number of mass-generated e-mails received by my office, effective March 16, 2007, my office will be implementing changes to the constituent correspondence process.
Consequently, I have established a new system on my website to better serve Ohio constituents. If you would like a written response to your e-mail, please go to http://voinovich.senate.gov and click on the CONTACT tab to fill out the web CONTACT FORM. By filling out this form, you will receive a written response from my office.
Thank you for your patience. Should you experience any problems with my web CONTACT FORM, please call my office at 202-224-3353 and my staff will be happy to guide you through the electronic correspondence process.
Well I posted about it on Eighties Euphoria, and I'm getting some interest from folks there on this side of the pond! I've also swallowed my pride and logged back on to 80sxchange and posted there about it as well! I'm getting bites! I posted the article Vamp posted on the Renegade Retro myspace profile Plus a draft letter I osted here a few pages back!
