America's Fastest-Growing Suburbs

Everybody wants to live near Pheonix?

The fastest-growing suburb in the country is Lincoln, Calif., just outside Sacramento. Its population jumped from 11,746 to 39,566, or an increase of 236%. The fastest-growing big suburb (with a population of 100,000 or more) is Gilbert, Ariz., outside Phoenix, which expanded from 112,766 people to 191,517.

While not cheap by national standards, the growth in Sacramento's outerlying areas is strong because it's a less-expensive alternative to Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego. The Phoenix area saw the greatest positive domestic migration of any American metro last year, with 115,000 more people moving into town than leaving. Affordable housing and a growing economy draw a lot of people to the city.

Rounding out the top 10 fastest-growing suburbs after Lincoln were four Phoenix suburbs: Buckeye, Surprise, Goodyear and Avondale; Plainfield, outside of Chicago; Beaumont, outside San Bernardino, Calif.; Frisco and Wylie outside of Dallas; and Woodstock, outside of Atlanta.

There's probably a lot more illegal migration that's unaccounted for. And AFFORDABLE housing?!? Yeah, MAYBE...if you live out in Queen Creek or Maricopa or halfway to L.A. My landlord would love to sell me my 1200 sq ft house built in 1972 in North Phoenix that I rent to me for about a quarter mil. I can't afford that. My mortgage payments would be higher than my rent. The economy is pretty good though; plenty o' job opportunities here.

Yeah, that dude involved in the police chase yesterday that resulted in two media helicopters crashing and killing 4 barricaded himself in a home near Avondale. Out of those 4 suburbs Surprise is the most decent, but your commute to anywhere in Phoenix is going to be close to an hour. And you have to go through Sun City and dodge all the senior citizens driving their golf carts on major streets.

My mom's coworker is moving to Surprise. Her friend is going to get them set up with a house and a job and stuff. Lucky.

I like the desert. I'd consider moving out that way, but Rice hates hot weather.

I don't hate the heat, I just prefer to see snow in my area every now and then without having to drive for several hours to see it
