Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I watched this last night...
There's no way you cant immediately tell this is Tim Burton...
It was good...I liked the modernization they did for some parts...the ending was different...but not too far out there.
Depp was good. He's no Gene Wilder, but he did a pretty good job. Had me giggling at it.
Has anyone else seen it yet, or planning too?

I couldn't disagree more. Depp outshined Wilder at every turn in my opinion. This is not to say I didn't like Gene Wilder's performance because I did and I always will. But Depp took it to the next level and no amount of sentiment for childhood memories can change that.
I imagine some of my bias comes from this remake being a lot more faithful to the book AND giving Wonka a background that no one else had bothered to do before. I sincerely hope they decide to make a film out of the sequel Roald Dahl wrote ( Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator). I'd like to see some CGI Vermicious Knids.

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Well...I understand your point...I enjoyed Depps performance alot. But..there were just a few things that I missed about Wilders performance that Depp just didnt go with...
But Depp was amazing..he did take it to his own adaptation...and I loved it.
I was very happy that they did go back into Wonkas childhood...it really added to the story...Im glad someone else saw it, so I didnt have to spoil anything...

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
If you can find the time (and in this day and age, it ain't easy), read Dahl's books. They took a few creative liberties with the original that worked just fine for the time because of effects limitations...especially how Veruca goes out. See if Depp's work doesn't take on an extra sparkle then.
And I honestly think he has a shot at an Oscar nomination for this. He's just as clever as he was in "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl".

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The original scared the hell out of me. I have no plans to watch the Depp version.
That movie totally freaks me out. Willy Wonka is evil. EVIL I tell you!

See, though, they give REASONS for his eccentricities in the new version which takes the story up a notch. And those scenes of his childhood are among some of the best in the film.
This is NOT the original film. Sure, it's mostly the same story overall but the tone and humor in the new version are worlds apart from the 70's picture.

C'mon! Rent it for the boys, cs! They will love it!
And, on another note...am I the ONLY one who thought the original Oompa Loompas looked like Ted Danson with a bad green wig, and a faulty tanning bed?

I need to find you that website about Grandpa Joe being evil. Then we'll see if Willy Wonka even compares.
Haven't seen the new version yet, but I'll get around to it on my day off. I've read the books, so I'm happy that they followed the original story more closely on this movie.
I found the website:

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Jess,
That site is truly bizarre and now I will have nightmares about that movie. One of the things that freaked me out about the movie was the part when they are on the boat and Gene Wilder is singing that weird song about which direction they were going and not knowing. The other part that messed with me was the room that got smaller - no wonder I hate crowds in small places!
I cannot visit this thread anymore!!!! Aaacckkk!

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I loved Willy Wonka and I love Charlie.
I have heard that, according to Roald Dahl's descendants, this movie was more faithful to the original vision. That's not to say the "original" movie was awful ... just a different telling of the same book. I did like how they "modernized" Charlie, with Violet being an overachiever and Mike being into violent video games. It seems to reflect how kids (in general) are today.
Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp both gave great performances as Willy Wonka. I loved Gene's sarcasm and Johnny's eccentricities (the "You're really weird" and that laugh!). The only part that was strange to watch was when they were in the TV room and Mike ran off ... I kept expecting Johnny to repeat the line of "Don't. Stop. Come back.". A very minor grievance though.
I've never been much of a fan of Johnny Depp but through the miracle of Pirates and Charlie, I am now a "Depphead".
Charlie has quickly become a favorite of mine and I don't think that will ever change.
