Thumbs up Memoirs of a Geisha

I have waited six damned years for them to make this movie. And it's coming out next month! I cannot begin to tell you how great the book was. Holy god, I've read it like twenty times and it never fails to bring me to tears. Even though I know certain elements will be changed to make it more dramatic (and people will be bitching because the lead characters are played by Chinese women instead of Japanese women), I am definitely looking forward to seeing this magnificent book on film....FINALLY.

Official site with shoddy trailer:
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/memoirsofageisha/

Japanese site with trailer advertising the movie as "Sayuri" (lead character's name):
http://www.movies.co.jp/sayuri/

Watch the trailers. It looks great. Zhang Ziyi had to learn to dance in 12 inch platform shoes (also known as "okobo", or "tall shoes") to perform the dance scene.

Wicked.

I want to see this too, but IMO,. I could do without the adverts in my NetFlix envelopes, and the major adverts in my favorite show. But thats just me.

I do need to go read the book though.

Re: Memoirs of a Geisha

I actually found the time to go and see this today. It was much, much better than I had expected it to be since they usually ruin the whole book to film process. I also know that a great many people were whining about the leads being Chinese. Hell, some people were even bitching because they folded the kimono the wrong way in a couple of scenes (which, in truth, is actually a big no-no in Japan)!

The characters were interesting, the costumes and sets were beautiful, and Zhang Ziyi did a hell of a job learning that snow dance. My only major problem with it was that the story seemed a bit rushed because they left out certain scenes from the book, which, IMO, should have been included. Ah well, it was still a damned good film. I'll probably go see it again next week.

I'd like to see this movie but I'm not in much of a hurry to do anything these days.

Finally got to see this, I really really liked it, but then I like most things having to do with Asian culture.

Especially House of the Flying Daggars and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
