Superman Returns

Review time:

My name is Thom Roberts. I'm 8 years old, and when I grow up I want to be Superman.

It can't be said any better than that.

Re: Superman Returns

Lemme axe ya dis though...

Over the five days since Wednesday, Superman has only made about $84M, which may be $2M above actual take. The film cost like $250M+ to make, not to mention all the promotions and stuff, which may drive the total cost of this film to $350M+. This is like "Hulk" bad economically. I think they are going to do a sequel anyway since Superman's return has been taken care of in this film and they're just working out the kinks to see how they do and what they can do better and what they can get away with, but still, to spend that much money and not get even a third of it back on the first weekend is bad news for the Man of Steel.

I have heard mostly favorable reviews, but there are some points that the peer reviews have made:

1. Why didn't they do a restart of the franchise like Chris Nolan did with Batman Begins? Batman rocked the house! By doing it as a continuation of Superman and Superman 2 (thank goodness they left out the last two godawful movies), they basically left in the "camp" factor.

2. The movie is loooooooooooong...which didn't hurt Lord of the Rings, so I don't think that will affect my decision to see it eventually.

3. Superman looks gay, substantiated by my wife. But then again, my friend Watt says that that is unavoidable, being that he wears his undies outside his pants and is color coordinated like a metrosexual

4. The plot reviews ranged between logical and nonsensical. What was your take on it?

I will most likely wait a few weeks, or even until the DVD release, before I see this movie. I think it's worth seeing at least once or twice, but from what I gleaned from the previews, it might not be worth full price despite all the $$$ they threw at it.

Re: Superman Returns

I thought it was fantastic. And I loved that they didn't restart it, like with Batman. Superman already has been restarted several times. On TV. Lois & Clark. Smallville. No need to see that again on the big screen. The way they continued it from 5 years after Superman II (I also agree, it's much better pretending 3 & 4 never happened) was brilliant. It gave them good material to work from, and they fleshed out the plot excellently. Sure, being 5 years from the last movie, considering technology and fashion difference between 2 and Returns looks odd, but that's forgiveable. I don't see it bombing. And I do remommend seeing it in the theatre. Problem for it? Pirates of the Caribbean comes out Friday. Superman won't hold #1 again. But it'll make its money.

See it. One of the best superhero movies since Batman Begins.

Re: Superman Returns

The good: special effects were pretty awesome. I liked that they paid homage to the Christopher Reeve films with the music and some of the scenes, and also the part where Superman saves the car is just like the cover of Action Comics #1 (I'm a nerd).

The bad: what an incredibly shitty plot. I was cool with the general premise of Superman returning from Krypton etc., but he made a superbaby!? And I was cool with him getting totally pwned by Lex Luthor, but he doesn't even get to hunt him down and toss his ass in jail? BAH.

Re: Superman Returns

I watched it on HD DVD on a 110-inch projection screen Saturday night. It was okay. I think I prefer the original and 2 to it though. Spacey was good as Lex Luthor. I probably wouldn't go buy it though, unless I had the above setup.
