Radio Shows from the 80's

Which one(s) did you listen to?

Mid-80's I would try to listen to American Top 40 (Casey Kasem, Shadoe Stevens) every week as well as Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40. Dr. Demento also aired on one of the local stations on Sunday Nights for awhile. Funny stuff.

Then in 1985 HOT MIX? ran on Phoenix-based KOPA-FM and I was hooked on learning how to mix records. The show moved to KZZP-FM in 1986 (and to Y-95 in 1990 or 1991).

The local stations usually had some daily countdown shows, like Top 8 at 8. KZZP also had the Saturday Night Party Patrol, where their DJs would visit parties at various locations in the Valley and the airwaves would pump with upbeat party music from 8 PM-1 AM.

As far as morning shows, I listened to a little of Dave Pratt on KUPD-FM (Hard Rock station) and a lot of Kelly & Co. (Bruce Kelly, KZZP/Y-95).

In the 80s, only one station all my radio's were tuned in to...KISW 99.9 FM Seattle's Best ROCK! All the hair bands you could handle!!! No particular show....24 hours of....well.....Essentially Metal Shop, minus the dorky DJ!

Re: Radio Shows from the 80's

I remember Rock Over London, which was a syndicated show that was recorded in England. It was hosted by Graham Deane, (sp) and it spotlighted the "up and coming" bands/artists in the UK. I actually got a request on the show for Talk Talk's "Such a Shame." I have it on cassette still and should find a way to get it on CD. I love the way Graham said my name, "Moley".

Re: Radio Shows from the 80's

We also got "AT40" with Casey Kasem on G98, but I preferred Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 on FM103. Rick Dees sounded better, and I personally preferred R & R's charts to Billboard's. Aside from that, we got Hot Mix on Saturday nights on FM103 and John Lander's Hit Music USA (very entertaining show) on Sunday mornings on FM103. Then we had Dr. Demento on Sunday night on WBLM. That was pretty much the extent of syndicated shows on Top 40 radio in Portland, Maine in the 80's.

Now? There's 2 stations broadcasting the exact same thing (literally, switching from one to the other gives you the exact same broadcast), satellite radio is prevalent, you can't even get a station catering to 80's fans. I think BLM still plays Dr. demeto, though. Not sure about that.

Re: Radio Shows from the 80's

Nowadays you can only catch an hour PER WEEK of 80s on KISW, otherwise you have to tune KZOK the CLASSIC Rock station and wade through all the 60s and 70s numbers before you get to the 80s.

Re: Radio Shows from the 80's

If you have the new Winamp, you can get XM80s and they play the old AT 40 with Casey Kasem. I think it's on tonight at 10pm EST and then again Sundays at noon, but I don't know if they changed it or not, because I haven't listened to it in a while. Check the XM web site for the schedule.

Cool to see that you guys got Hot Mix up that way. That's what inspired me to DJ back then. I started listening from nearly the beginning in 1985. Here is the inspiring story (to me anyway) of how two DJs turned Hot Mix into a worldwide syndicated success.
