Disney Backing Away from Junk Food

Interesting news here:

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hi...5/08/2288.aspx

What catches my interest most is this quote:
"Why is Disney doing this? Well, the Mouse?s attorneys are looking to distance the Walt Disney Company from the next big legal storm on the horizon. Which is all the pending ?Big Food? litigation.

?What pending ?Big Food? litigation?,? you ask. Well, do you remember last week when former president Bill Clinton announced that he had just brokered a deal with the nation?s largest beverage distributors? One which would soon result in non-diet drinks being removed from vending machines in schools all over the country?

Or ? better yet ? how about last year, when Kraft announced that it would stop advertising junk food to kids under 12?

The nation?s beverage distributors and Kraft Foods aren?t doing this (I.E. Suddenly turning their backs on billions of dollars) because they?re just a swell bunch of guys. They?re doing this because of all the coming childhood obesity lawsuits.

?What childhood obesity lawsuits?,? you query. Surely, you?re aware of the new ?hot button issue.? Our nation?s leaders are no longer obsessing about bird flu and/or gas prices. What concerns all the pols in Washington now is fat kids.
"

What the hell happened to people being responsible for themselves? Is this country so fucked up that companies can't even advertise with a fast food restaurant for fear of being sued because someone's kid got fat because they let them eat there all the time and didn't make sure they went out, played and exercised? And I'm not even a fan of big business!!!!

Re: Disney Backing Away from Junk Food

Amen. This is one issue that is lame. I don't eat/drink a lot of junk food, nor does Jason. It is very simple to start your kids out early with good eating habits. If you're too lazy to make healthy food, then at least take them to Subway or Quizno's and get them a semi-healthy alternative to McDonald's or Burger King. Hell, you don't even have to do that now. The big fast food places are starting to offer more healthier alternatives in their menus. When I took Jason to BK, I got him a kid's meal with a plain hamburger, milk, and an applesauce cup. Nothing wrong with that.
